adjusting cues on EN4 without disabling

Sorry, a new onyx user and new to dmx in general! I have a bunch of cues for my 4 cameo lights set up on my EN4 by someone with a flx s24. (Which randomly I still have, but the touchscreen is a bit broken… whole other story).

I want to figure out how to save these cues down to onyx, as I have my nx touch, and want to use onyx as my main software of choice.

Can I recall my EN4 cues and then pull that info into onyx? Is it happening already and I just don’t notice it? Also I found that to move the lights from onyx on my pc I have to set the EN4 to disable cues. is there a setting (maybe in EN4 ) to allow override once in cue position? I am using onyx networked to EN4. I did add my nx touch to a dmx port, but tbh, not figured out how to use the touch quite yet, that needs to be later in my learning. When I plug the flx into the dmx port I can control through this no worries. (Although, I also don’t have much of an idea how to use the flx and as I mentioned it’s limited due to the touchscreen being a bit busted). I am mainly trying to control dark when move on my cameos, but I will post that as a separate question.

This requires a fair bit of configuration, but is possible, and probably quicker than reprogramming your cues from scratch.

Can I recall my EN4 cues and then pull that info into onyx?

The first thing you will need to do, is patch your fixtures into ONYX as normal. Then, connect your EN4 to your ONYX PC via a single Ethernet cable, and configure the network settings on both devices. For example, EN4 on 192.168.0.10, and your PC on 192.168.0.20, both with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

In ONYX, go to Menu > EtherDMX > Settings, and enable sACN input…

Then go to Menu > DMX In > Routing, and enable Port 1. Set it to sACN, and set the range of universes, to the range of universes configured on the EN4…

Then go to the Mergers tab, and enable Merger 1…

Connect to your EN4’s webpage, and make sure that the output ports are also set to sACN.

Then go to Cues > Run Cues, and enable Resend Ethernet, and click save…

Then choose a cue, and click Run.

In ONYX, exit the Menu, and view the Programmer window. Then tap LOAD, and choose “DMX IN”, followed by enter…

You should find your cue values are then brought into the programmer. You can then store this as a cue in ONYX.

In the latest firmware for the Netron EN4, you have the ability to choose whether Cues take Priority, or whether the incoming DMX has priority. You could therefore configure the EN4 to only output cues when incoming DMX is not present.

FLX S consoles actually use a Raspberry Pi touchscreen. Therefore if you are comfortable with opening the console, you may be able to replace this yourself.

2. I will definitely update the EN4 as you mentioned, however I did notice that it said on the website V2 saves won’t work with V3, which is why I want to save cues to ONYX first, to then recall them to save with the new version of the CLI software for the EN4.
3. I will test the ability to get ONYX via the web to override the EN4 once I get the new firmware on.

HI Edward, So it’s taken almost a year to get back into the space to do work on this (access to this room is a mare). I have followed your instructions, and they were amazing, I have been able to see the DMX in when I recall cues from the EN4. One really daft question. I have just watched the tutorials on cues and lists, and I can see how it is done when building your own, but once I can see the values in the programmer, I can’t figure how to save them to a cue. I’m 99% there! Just failing at the last hurdle. I’m going back to see if I can figure it out. If you are sending DMX into ONYX, you can use the LOAD command to load these incoming values into the ONYX programmer:

You should find your cue values are then brought into the programmer. You can then store this as a cue in ONYX.

Once in the ONYX programmer, you can then tap RECORD, and record the lighting state as if you’d created it yourself. After tapping RECORD, if you have not yet started a cuelist, tap a button below a playback to create one. If you are already working in a cuelist, please ensure it is selected. The selected cuelist is displayed at the very top of ONYX. When selected, you can use the shortcut RECORD RECORD to record the programmer values into the next available cue on the selected cuelist.

Brilliant, thanks! I managed to figure this out. I also found out that the flx that was plugged in was overriding onyx, so I unplugged that. I have managed to get cues into a cuelist. Thank you very much for the video. At 1:10, after pressing LOAD, and choosing DMX IN, you will then need to press ENTER to confirm. This will then load the values into ONYX. At this point, you can then press RECORD RECORD to store the values into the next cue in the selected list.

Tip: If you are pressing LOAD > DMX IN regularly, tap LOAD, tap DMX IN, and then in the Load popup, click the Star. This will then favourite your current Load settings, meaning next time LOAD is pressed, DMX IN will already be selected, saving you a step.

Before playing back your cues, you will then need to press CLEAR CLEAR in ONYX. This is exactly the same as the FLX S, and is done to clear the manual parameter edits you have made.

Exactly as you say in the video: because your EN4 is currently running v2.9.4 firmware, cues will always have the highest priority. This means if a cue is playing, it will ignore the incoming sACN/Art-Net from a connected console, until the cue is switched off. In v3.0.1 firmware, an option is provided to allow you to choose whether cues have priority, or the console has priority. By default, the console will have priority, rather than cues.

Brilliant! Shows how little I know about DMX and lighting desks. . Once (as you pointed out) I had to clear clear, it was all good. I also had to clear after I loaded the dmx in before I did the next load in. Got all of the cues saved.
I downloaded latest CLU and it found the device. Unfortunately it gets to 75% (checking for reboot) and times out. I have tried multiple times to update via CLU and it won’t do it.
Interesting to note, before I tried to update In the CLU software I could see in the devices and network section all of my lights as well as the EN4, now the lights have disappeared (they still work if I recall the cues). I checked the instructions for CLU (rev4) but it actually looks older than the latest clu. I see there is no option to separately install the firmware and web firmware, I guess it;;s an all-in-one install now? Either way, I can;t get it to update, I also tried the 3.01.nfw firmware via the web interface, and that failed as well. I have hard rebooted the device between tries, and it shows as before, everything on 2.9.4
Any ideas on updating? Thanks

This will explain how you may need to do the update in two parts, if the EN4 previously had a custom IP address.

Hi Edward, I’m going to stop for today. For some reason the CLU software keeps starting the firmware update at 70%. I have rebooted the EN4, rebooted my laptop, re-installed CLU.. to no avail. EN4 is working fine ,but stuck on previous firmware. Both laptop and EN4 are on the same subnet. Only thing I haven’t tried is a factory reset of the EN4 (I guess there is a button for that somewhere). R.e. ip address, it’s set on DHCP. I fix my ip for both devices, and connect between them directly with a network cable if you think that will fix it.

In CLU 2.0, please go to the Firmware Update tab, and then click on the Recovery button for the EN4. Please then go to the following directory:
C:\ProgramData\Obsidian Control Systems\Netron\Firmware

In here, please choose “NETRON_EN4_Firmware_V3.0.1.nfw” to start the installation. The progress will be shown on the EN4’s OLED.

Once the firmware update has completed, please then reconfigure the EN4’s IP address to DHCP. In CLU 2.0, you should then be able to click the “Web Update” button to complete the update.

Just popped in just now as the room was free. No joy. Clicked recovery, selected the file. EN4 says “update” flashing on the screen. Logo then appears like it’s done an update or reboot. I check information section on en4 via dial and oled. Still showing old firmware version for sys and web. Still has all my previous cues and on DHCP.

Sorted. Not sure if it was it didn’t like netport B rather than A (it was plugged into B on the network, I put my laptop and EN4 on fixed ip, connected them directly via port A. All good, ALl firmware updated.

Thank you very much for the update. Glad you were able to perform the upgrade with your laptop connected directly to the EN4.

It seems as though there may have been some traffic on the network that was interrupting the update. Using Port A rather than Port B will not have made a difference.

One last thing Edward (I say, that! - probably more). I had a look through the manual and online, and I cannot figure how to get onyx on my laptop to prioritise over the cues. How do I do this? I messed around with the merge options, but couldn’t figure it out (everything is on universe 1, but I have 2 dmx outputs for left and right of the space). Thanks

Please connect to the EN4’s webpage, and navigate to the Inputs webpage. In here, please check the Priority is “DMX”, which it should be by default. This means a port that is currently receiving sACN/Art-Net cannot output cue data, even if a cue has been triggered.

It is not possible for a port to Merge sACN/Art-Net input and cue data together. A port will output the incoming sACN/Art-Net OR cue data. Therefore, Port Merging can be left disabled.
