Bug when using Virtual Dimmer Channel fixtures with Onyx 4.30.1274 and 4.31.1292beta

Multiple issues, but they seem to revolve around trying to add certain fixtures with Virtual dimmers, specifically a custom fixture made by modifying the standard library fixture “Generic Color>WW CW 8bit” in which only the labels on type and parameters were changed, and also attempting to add the standard library type fixture “Generic Color>WW CW 16bit” with virtual dimmer on.

In the first case (custom fixture) the fixture loaded, but when selected in programmer had no parameters available at all.

In the second case (standard library fixture), the fixture would not be added to patch. It looked as though the patch happened, but when it “completed”, the fixture was not there. Furthermore, and much worse, it broke Onyx. After that, Onyx was only marginally responsive, and would not load at all upon restarting program. It required restarting the computer to get Onyx to load at all, and even then it wouldn’t load the most recent showfile (with that fixture (supposedly) added. I had to go back to an earlier showfile to even get it to start. It also would not recognize an Onyx Wing when it was plugged in, requiring yet another restart.

I can send you the previous showfile, just before attempting to patch the WW CW (d) 16b standard library fixture, since I was unable to save the showfile after patching it because Onyx was unresponsive. Please tell me what cloud sharing service you would like, since that showfile for some reason is 220MB, very strange since there is not much content in it and no Dylos content at all.

UPDATE

I went back and saved the show “without content”. Wierd, because there isn’t any Dylos content in there, to start with, but it’s 4 some MB now.

The library is updated to 16 Feb 25 . The custom user fixture I made is 902 “WW CW Custom…” It doesn’t show any parameters when I select it. All I did in fixture editor was to change the make, name, and labels on the params.

Please try to load, from the standard library, “Generic Colors>WW CW” 16 bit (4 channels) with Virtual Dimmer on. I’m afraid to try it again because I’m running out of time on this show I’m trying to prep.

UPDATE 2:

Because I was having so many problems with versions 4.30 and 4.31, I rolled back to 4.10.1271, and thus had an opportunity to test the standard Generic Color>WW CW (d). It works in this version of Onyx, just not in the latest version.

Could you rather upload the customized fixture type? I suspect something went wrong there, as I don’t notice any issues when adding both original types to a new show…

I can’t export the original one I made, as it was on my other, main, machine, which I have since rolled back to 4.10.1271. However my laptop still has 4.31.1292 on it, so I have recreated the fixture there and uploaded it here.

In testing on my laptop with 4.31, I can confirm that the original standard library fixture “Generic Color>WW CW 16b” with Virtual Dimmer on, does add to the patch correctly and work correctly.

When I try to add my Custom WW CW 8b however (also with virtual dimmer on),

  • it does not add to the patch. Onyx shows the beginning of the adding to patch messages at top of screen, but those don’t complete, and the fixture is not added.
-furthermore, after attempting twice to add it to the patch and failing, I went back to the programming screens, and Onyx was unresponsive. Attempting to select fixtures with the onscreen keypad does not load them into the programmer, nor does pressing the square in fixtures window.
  • However, restarting Onyx did restore basic functionality, although the Custom fixture still did not appear in the patch.

I’m going to have to leave off testing this for a couple weeks. I’m prepping a show, and my laptop serves as my backup/rigging system, so I will need to uninstall/reinstall Onyx back to 4.10.1271 so it matches my main computer so I can trade files back and forth.

One thing that occurred to me is that, originally on my main machine, I had first tried to add my custom fixture, which showed in patch but didn’t function. It was only after that that I tried to add the standard library WW CW 16b, which also did not work. But since it seems like something about my custom fixture is what is breaking the system, maybe thats the reason the standard fixture didn’t work, since it seems to be working now.

If I might add, I put in a fixture request about this last night as well, The existing, standard Generic Color>WW CW seems to work fine, other than that first time on my main computer, the only detail that bothered me is the parameter labels come up “White” (should be Warm White, or WW, etc.) and “Warm White” (should be Cool White). Since I’m really trying to perfect my Onyx layouts, this is all I was trying to change by editing the fixture.

Thank you for your assistance with this.

Thank you very much for the detailed information. I am able to replicate the issue you are encountering when attempting to patch this fixture. I have logged this issue on our system (reference ONYX-1158), to allow our software team to investigate further.

Please let us know if you have any questions.
