Been using a Netron EP4 to run our lights for about 6 months with no issues. Suddenly last week when you bring the lights up some have begun flickering. Doing a full reboot of the PC seems to fix it but it’s obviously not ideal, would this be a EP4 issue or a PC issue?
Did you ever get a response on this? I’ve got an EP4 that’s worked flawlessly for months/over a year and over the weekend went haywire. Outputting gibberish on all 4 ports - firmware update and factory reset won’t fix. Unuseable currently
Is the EP4 powered via USB-C or POE?
I’m currently having a similar issue:
ETCNet3 and ETC Ion recognize 2 of the three EP4 gateways but after lots of tests what is happening is the reboot of our ETC paradigm and network the scrollers are not jittering until the board turns on or is activated in a cue or channels set to a scrolled color. We have tested all cables to Ethercon at raceway, at paradigm, and at board, only changes with network not signaling to board that the scroller wants to do something, ie. Change color.
Again new equipment that had been working and two EP4 systems still functioning properly only one not and all on separate universes at the board, all showing correct IP addresses on web interface for each.
Now that the problem is narrowed down, here are my suggestions for next steps:
- Try replacing the cables between the raceway and the board. (Did that but no change).
- Check the settings in the board - the settings I looked at on your laptop are the same between the working one and the one that’s acting funny, but maybe something’s off in the ion side. - What could be incorrect if patch is correct?
- Try contacting Obsidian - is this a firmware issue?
- Try contacting ETC. Even though it’s not an ETC product they have a lot of very smart people over there that might have seen something like this with a scroller.
Since you were able to program looks, the addressing should not be the issue, and I also eliminated the possibility that it’s overloaded DMX since I isolated those two groups while testing the power. And we know it’s not an issue with the scrollers themselves since they demonstrate that they’re able to scroll when starting up.
Hi @JR1
Thank you for your description of the issue.
Please check the firmware version on all three EP4s - is the EP4 that seems to be causing problems on a different firmware version? If all three EP4s are on the same firmware, are they configured differently? For example, is RDM enabled on the EP4 causing problems, but disabled on the others?
The latest firmware for EP4 is 2.9.4, which is available here…

Sorry - all settings are exactly the same and all EP4s seem to be the same details throughout, except for IP addresses and universes because we configured those originally correctly as they had all three been working just fine until recently.
How are they powered?
B port on the EP4 POE on our ETCNet3 Raceways to an ETC Sensor Rack to our Paradigm system and then using DMX which is powered by their DMX power supply and each of those have a terminator
