LICENSE QUESTION : which universes have output?

Software Version:
NX Console Type or PC OS Version: nxw/essential usb on 4.32.1301

When limited to a 8 universe essental dongle or a 16 universe nxw, how does onyx chose which of the patched the universes are being output? I have about 30 universes patched, but need the last ones to have output

As I know they are always start from first to enabled
1-4, 1-8 etc

@Robbertarentz - ONYX will utilize the maximum number of universes detected by the attached hardware. So if you have the NXW plugged in, you’ll get 1-16. Licenses are not additive.

I would recommend using the “MOVE Universe” command. This will allow you to move your lower universe(s) to a higher range and then move your higher universe(s) to the lower range to obtain output. You will not loose any programming and you can move the entire universe. It will be one at a time, but this will prevent you from having to repatch. Depending on your rig setup, you may need to adjust node(s) / output devices, but it will be pretty easy.

Last option would be to acquire an ONYX 32 universe key.

Hope this helps,

Watson

Hi Watson,

Thanks for your help! I read somewhere that unlocked universes can be freely patched in the 0-255 range, not just the first ones. If this is true, next question would be what logic onyx uses to choose which universes receive output. The move universe command is very helpfull, but not in my use case, since I have 12 universes of pixel data that I want to keep away from u1-16 because they are typically used for houserigs…

@Robbertarentz ,

So this is a little tricky. In ONYX you can patch fixtures anywhere on universes 1-255. However, ONYX will only output on the universes ip to the maximum allowed amount based on connected hardware or keys.

So if you have an NXW connected to a PC you will have output on universes 1 through 16. However you can have fixtures patched on universes 1 through 8, 14 through 20, and 32 through 45. But again only output of universes 1 through 16 (consecutively). So universes 17 and beyond can be patched and programmed, just no output.

Here is the manual for reference. There is a paragraph mid explanation staying the output limitation.

Hope this helps explain better,

Watson

If you have a Key License or hardware with a Key inside you can use any Universe number from 0-255. If you have a license of 16 you can use it up e.g. 101-116, if you then patch Universe 117 it would have a lock icon on it and won’t output.
Also doesn’t have to be a block, use any number you want until 16 Universes are used up.

This is not correct, you can use any universe numbers until you used up 16 slots.

@Matthias -

Thanks for the correction. Based on the manual I interpreted it as universe 1 through maximum licensed amount.

So to correct my example … how are you able to determine which 16 universes (slots) are to be licensed for output? I’m familiar with the lock icon when things are patched past the license amount.

Watson

it simply counts every used Universe from 1 until the license amount is used up.

Ok, that is excellent! Thank you both very much.
