Hi,
I want to use an ns8 for my MA-net and art-net devices, as I have too much of them, I plugged a netgear gs308ep out of a MaNet VLAN port. I don’t know why but sometimes the computers take the DHCP Adresses and sometimes not (Most of the time). Same thing for the Consoles.
To confirm your network topology, do you have your Netgear switch and NS8 connected together, with all devices plugged in via these switches? If so, are your Netgear switch and NS8 connected via a Trunk connection?
NS8 can have a DHCP server per VLAN. Which VLANs are you using DHCP on? Can you confirm there are no devices on these VLANs with static IP addresses that may conflict with the DHCP pool?
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Edward
The netgear switch has 2 vlans, I have no other parameters in it (no dhcp). 1 vlan is for MANet, and is connected to the MANet Vlan of the NS8, the other vlan is for artnet, and is connected to the artnet vlan of the ns8. I have 4 ports for each vlan in the netgear switch.
I want the dhcp only on the MANet vlan, i activated it in the NS8, the ip adress of the ns8 is 192.168.101.254 /24, the netgear switch is set as dhcp as well as the computers and the consoles.
The ip range of the dhcp is 192.168.101.1 to 192.168.101.250 /24
There is no trunk connection, let me know if it should work with trunk, i thought it was not possible so for now i use a port of the manet vlan of the ns8 to go to the manet vlan of the netgear and same for the artnet.
Except the ns8 himself, there is no static ip adress
Ps : I tested the dhcp of an external router and it works (it is plugged into the netgear switch and distribute addresses to devices both in the netgear switch and the nd8)
It is fine to connect the Netgear switch and NS8 together with two Ethernet cables - one for each VLAN. The benefit of using a Trunk connection is it means you can just use a single gigabit Ethernet cable between the switches to connect both VLANs.
What is the VLAN ID of your MANet VLAN that has DHCP enabled?
When DHCP is enabled on the NS8 MANet VLAN, do all devices on the VLAN sometimes lose their DHCP assignment, or does it only seem to be devices connected to the Netgear switch? Are devices defaulting to a link local address (169.254.x.y), rather than obtaining a 192.168.101.x DHCP address from the NS8?
The vlan id of MAnet is 2 and yes, even if the devices are directly connected into the ns8, it does not always work (a local ip adress is assigned in 169…)
Please could you provide a screenshot of the configuration screen for VLAN ID 2 on your NS8? This can be found from the webserver in Switch > VLAN Configuration > choose your VLAN assignment. Feel free to send this to support@obsidiancontrol.com if that’s easiest.
If you just connect a Windows laptop to VLAN ID 2 on the NS8, with no other devices connected to the NS8, does the laptop reliably obtain a DHCP address? Is this same DHCP address assigned each time the NS8 is power cycled or the laptop is disconnected and reconnected?
