NX1 Should Get 16 Universes Like The NX1-16

I was told by a source from Obsidian that the NX1 Console could not get 16 Universes due to RAM limitation and that the new 1-16 got 16 Universes because it has more RAM. That made sense at the time, HOWEVER, looking at the minimum system requirements it states that 8gb if RAM is the minimum for 16 Universes which seems to contradict when I asked why we also couldn’t have the 16 universe license especially for people who purchased a NX1 and then had the rug pulled out from under them when they released a newer model months later.

So which story is it, the NX1 can’t handle 16 Universes or we are stuck with 8 due to RAM limitations? If so, the minimum system requirements for onyx needs to be updated to reflect that 8GB of RAM can only handle 8 universes. Also the min system requirements kind of contradict the hardware that’s inside of a NX1 especially recommending graphics cards and I3-5-7 processors when the NX1 has a Pentium Gold processor…

…please give us a updatekit in any way, like m6 gets. and 16 universes + 5 dylos zones for a fair price! instead, all our nx1 costumer who belive the fairytale of hardware stays and software crows, which the team arround matthias had told us, will jump out of the onyx ship. sorry, but the nx1 gate was a onyx killer in our costumer pool. and they all invest in blue consoles or wings instaed. thx.

This isn’t just related to RAM. The NX1-16 motherboard features a more powerful processor, required for running 16 universes including DyLOS.

The NX1’s motherboard and processor cannot reliably handle more than 8 universes including DyLOS.

An upgrade kit would almost be the same cost as an NX1-16, so it does not make sense. This is because the NX1-16 features a new motherboard, and new metalwork to accommodate it.

The specs for 16 Universes says otherwise on the website so it’s conflicting information.

The NX1-16 is still limited to 2 Dylos Zones just like the Original NX1.

I want to clarify a few points here.

The minimum required PC specifications listed on the ONYX website are intended for user-provided PC systems. They do not directly translate to console hardware. Consoles are validated differently because they are fixed embedded systems with specific thermal, power, BIOS, driver, and long-term support requirements. Before a console license tier is approved, we test the complete hardware platform under sustained load, including higher operating temperatures and real-world show conditions.

The NX1 limitation is not based on RAM alone. Overall system performance, including CPU, GPU, memory performance, thermal behavior, power delivery, and long-term reliability, all factor into what license tier can be supported on a console.

When component availability required us to revise the NX1 hardware platform, the updated motherboard used in the NX1-16 brought several improvements, including updated power delivery, BIOS-level optimizations, improved CPU/GPU performance, and better memory behavior. After validation, we determined that the revised platform could reliably support a limited 16-universe configuration with 2 DyLOS zones.

That same validation did not support increasing the original NX1 beyond 8 universes while maintaining the reliability standards we require for a console product.

An upgrade kit for the original NX1 was also evaluated, but it was not practical. The updated motherboard is not physically compatible with the original NX1 bottom chassis, so the required changes would involve much more than a simple board swap and would approach the cost and complexity of a new unit.

I also want to clarify the timeline. The original NX1 was on the market for approximately three plus years before the NX1-16 was announced. I understand the frustration from users who wanted the original NX1 to be expandable further, but the NX1-16 was not simply a software unlock. It was based on a revised hardware platform that tested differently from the original NX1.

what about give users the chance to us it as a nxp on a pc system? we can see the normal usb thru the back of the console, is it possible to give advise to use the nxp part which is build in the nx1 1, as nx p?

The NX1 is still an active and supported console. It will continue to receive ONYX software updates, so it is not being treated as a dead or abandoned product.

Using the internal playback hardware as an NX-P on a separate PC is not something we can recommend or support.

While the internal playback section may be based on hardware similar to that of an NX-P, it was designed and validated as part of the complete NX1 console system. Accessing it externally would require opening the console, disconnecting internal wiring, and using the hardware outside of its intended configuration. That could affect reliability, serviceability, warranty status, and support.

For users who specifically need a PC-based playback surface, the recommended approach is to use an NX-P. The NX1 should be used as a complete console, as it was designed and tested.
