I have a festival gig coming up in March. I am teaming up with another lighting crew. I am on Onyx, they are on GrandMA. We are going to set up Artnet and run a dmx node at the stage. This will be the first time we have attempted to have both consoles running.
I am curious if anyone has any experience trying this? We mostly plan on switching operators and consoles per set, but also like the idea of sending signal from both consoles (It’s about 1000 person edm camping festival, so very relaxed FOH)
Example: GrandMa is running the show, Onyx has no cues running and empty programmer. Does my default values effect his show?
Do we need to park the consoles when we switch off?
Onyx is running the show, what if GrandMA wants to hit a strobe, or run a movement cue?
I work with those 2 consoles too. I like to send sACN or Arnett from my NX1 to the GrandMA. All output to the stage is them from the MA. You can use both consoles together, each one controlling different fixtures, or you can hand control from one console to the other. Here’s a video on how to achieve that. https://youtu.be/LV6XEqeWLQ0?si=a9tqq6awnu3j2DgY
Another potential option is to output sACN from ONYX and MA, rather than Art-Net. Each sACN source can output at a custom priority. Therefore, when the MA needs to have control, it can just output sACN at a higher priority. If ONYX is at a lower priority, any control changes made by ONYX should be ignored by the Ethernet to DMX gateway device at the other end. If ONYX’s priority is raised, or the priority is lowered in MA, ONYX will then have control.
When switching priorities, it is a good idea to have the same default cue recorded on both the MA and ONYX. That way, both consoles can output the default cue, you can then switch priorities, and you will then have a seamless switchover.
