Syncing lighting to music videos

I teach at an alternative high school. To teach lighting design I would like to have my students create a lighting show to sync with their favorite music video and then host a school dance. I am having trouble figuring out the best way to sync the lighting to the video. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I understand DMX but this is my first time digging into the lighting control software. Several hours into youtube and I at least have a solid base understanding of the Onyx interface. Thanks in advance for your help.

hello, we mostly use timecode in this case. but also trigger cues or cuelists by a extern miditrack is possible. you can also use external tool with a timeline and oscoutput.
but the most onyx intern sync methode will be timecode.
the internal timecode is easy to use and control by seperate cuelists with tc macros.
if you use an external tc source, the best way is to use a audiofile, or player, which is able to send a seperate track with the tcaudio.
so there is no chance to get out of sync.
