Hello, recently I updated Onyx on a Martin M6 with the upgrade kit and noticed that when I was installing Onyx OS, it booted a Windows 11 installer, but installed Windows 10. Any reason why it didn’t just install Windows 11, especially since both Windows 10 and 11 are in the ISO? I don’t see why this desk couldn’t support it.
The only reason I can see as to why it would have done 10 instead of 11 is because the AMD GPU drivers are only provided in the Win10 OOB Drivers, but the AMD Pro WX4100 has Windows 11 drivers.
The installer will auto install the OS (Win 10 or Win 11 Special Edition) that matches the license key inside of the console.
The OS is not a normal version of Windows 10/11, it is a special edition that has most of the “consumer” features removed and allows for Onyx systems integrate on top of it.
The M6 carries a Win10 “IOT” License and the correct OS is automatically installed.
Ah okay, that makes more sense. Is there a limitation that you have to have the exact license for the version you are installing with IoT? At least with normal Windows versions you can use a license key from 10 for 11 as 11 was a free upgrade from 10.
IOT doesn’t work that way, otherwise we would use Win 11 on all desks. The license is part of the hardware sold and can’t be upgraded for free.
Oh, that’s unfortunate. Thanks for the info! Is there thought about selling a new dongle for consoles like the M6 with new Windows 11 IoT Enterprise licenses on them?
No there is no plans, and really no need for it.
Alright. Thank you!
Hello! With the recent news of the dropping support of most M-series consoles, I became curious as to why the M6 is not being dropped. I haven’t actually updated to 4.30 yet, but I would assume it is still running Windows 10, not 11. Is that the technical reason it is still supported?
M6 consoles with the ONYX upgrade kit can run ONYX 4.30. This is because the ONYX upgrade kit included the new ONYX licencing, replacing the affected Martin licencing.
